Thursday 13

I’ve spent the last few days at Starbucks. I’ve gotten quite a bit of writing done and I’ve finished all of my contest entries (well, the ones that are do this week anyway). So, I present 13 Things I Love About Starbucks!

(Oh, and I don’t know why the Mr. Linky thing put big red X’s after everybody last week. I hope it doesn’t do it today, but…)

Thirteen Things I love about Starbucks

1. No Internet - well, technically I suppose there is, but I’ve got more will power at Starbucks than I do at home.

2. The day that I switch from hot drinks to cold drinks (that was this week).

3. Comfy chairs

4. You can actually learn quite a bit from sitting at Starbucks for several hours. The other day I sat near 2 med students studying for an osteology exam and learned all about the bones of the head and face.

5. You can’t make this crap up. I’m amazed at some of the stuff people talk about in a coffee shop. It’s like they think they’re alone instead of in a group of people.

6. Caffeine! My fingers fly with a venti non-fat sugar free vanilla latte in my system!

7. Seasonal drinks. Pumpkin spice in the fall, Peppermint white mocha’s around Xmas, and Pomegranite frappicino’s in the summer.

8. People watching.

9. Body language. Starbucks is a good place for first meetings (or friends meeting, but are they really only friends) and it’s fun to watch new people meet.

10. Starbucks music. I don’t know why, but I love it!

11. Blueberry scones. (And actually, their new breakfast sandwiches are quite good, too).

12. You get to be social without actually being social. There’s actually something kind of cool about sitting with a bunch of other people working on their laptops.

13. I get to say things like, “I write sex scenes in Starbucks!”

There is nothing like Starbucks for people watching! And pumpkin spice coffee. And here I am stuck at work… Dang!

  3. RG Says:

I agree-people talk about the craziest things-its wonderful.

  4. Elle Fredrix Says:

Yeah, people watching and body language. We writers love to observe!

Oh, and the red Xs on Mr Linky? That happened to me and I realized it was just becuase I was still logged into my Mr Linky account. Log out, refresh your blog page and away they go!

  5. Nancy Henderson Says:

I wish I had a Starbucks near me! Sounds cool!

  6. Crystal Jordan Says:

I know this is horrible for an author to say, but I don’t drink coffee. So I completely love Starbuck’s Hot Chocolate.

  7. Cat Marsters Says:

Elle, thank you for that tip: I had those annoying X’s too!

Emma, you make a lot of good points, especially about the people-watching! I wish I could work in public, but I can’t even leave my office door open…

  8. Emma Wayne Porter Says:

5, 8 & 9. Aren’t we horrible little creatures, doing this? Oddly though, I don’t feel the least bit guilty.

I’m still laughing at #13. I can’t say that… yet. This will have to go on the to-do list.

  9. Shonna Brannon Says:

I’m almost embarrassed to admit that I’ve never stepped foot in a starbucks. This is mainly because I don’t drink coffee. LOL

  10. Mandy M. Roth Says:

OOoo haven’t tried their breakfast sandwiches yet.

  11. Kate Willoughby Says:

I work at Starbucks! I’m usually really busy, so I don’t have much time to people watch. However I did want to tell you that you can get the pomegranate frappucinos year round. :)

  12. Amie Says:

I’m with Cat. I love my isolation, but then I never TRIED to write at Starbucks before :D
Ohhhhhhhhhhhh did you know you can get the cinnamon dolce lattes as a frap? and sugar free and decaf *sigh* there is a god.

  13. Emma Says:

Thanks for the tip on getting rid of the X’s, Elle!

Amie - I’m dying to try the cinnamon docle frap but haven’t been able to work up the courage yet. I just can’t figure out if it’d be good.

And I still think Starubcks is woth it even if you don’t drink coffee! I mean, I only actually drink coffee drinks about half the time I’m there, lol!

  14. Lis Says:

You may have just tempted me to go spend an afternoon in Starbucks lol

  15. Heather Says:

Overheard conversations can be quite…interesting…at times. People can be so oblivious to their surroundings or who might be listening to them. This is especially true of cell phone users. The things I’ve overheard on the bus!

  16. Jennifer Bianco Says:

Your list sounds great. I’ve never been to a Starbucks — none around here — although I have tried their coffee. Way to strong for me, but I love the idea of a place to sit and write in. Unfortunately I have these two little people in my home that makes that a guilt-ridden impossibility right now. Those drinks sound scrumptious though. Yum!

  17. Michelle M Pillow Says:

    Mmmm, coffee :D

  18. Tilly Greene Says:

What a list! I’m not a coffee drinker so your Starbucks is my Panera - good hot chocolate and lemonade, also another wonderful place to plant the backside and watch, listen and learn. Last time there, I met a woman who was a pilot trying to decide if she should move out to Montana to be the private jet pilot for a CEO :-)

    Hugs darlin’!

  19. Amelia Elias Says:

LOL @ writing sex scenes in Starbucks! Never had the pomegranite drink but I’m intrigued. I’ve had to give up caffeine (waah!) but I’m partial to their decaf chai lattes. Of course, the weirdest place I’ve written was at the playground with my boys during the summer… 102 in the shade, kids everywhere, my sons running over to me every few minutes to get a drink, and I’m writing this kinky sex scene. Talk about feeling like a pervert!

  20. Eva Gale Says:

Venti house, milk no sugar. Just inject it please!

  21. Shari Straight Says:

I’m anti-chain coffee shops, but there’s a couple a really cool local places I go. One of them got reviewed recently as “the coffee place with the eerily slient back room, where everyone is working on their laptops…” Probably the only quiet coffee shop in town!!
