Last of the pics

Sorry, I’m still working on catching up and now the inlaws and some Aussie relatives are coming to visit which means I have to spend most of my day cleaning this dump, uh, I mean apartment.

So, you get more pictures…

Our last day there we went to Volcano National Park (it’s on the other side of the island but only took about 2 1/2 hours to get there).

This is steam rising form the Kilauea caldera.

As you can probably tell, it was raining for most of the day. The west side of the island is desert while the east side (and the side with volcanoes) is rainforest.

Kilauea is the most active volcano in the world, (I think) at least in Hawaii definately. It’s been erupting since 1983.

Here you can see where the lava meets the ocean, building more island and sending a huge plume of steam into the air.

This is Crater Rim drive. Apparently you used to be able to drive all the way down it. But, well, no more.

Actually, it’s about a mile walk from where you have to park your car to this spot and then another few miles or so to get to the steam vent. Unfortunately, as soon as we got there it started to rain pretty hard and wet lava is VERY slippery so we were forced to turn back.

Lava does some cool stuff. It made this arch, and it also made this really cool lava tube (that we don’t have any pics of) but you could walk through and it was a big cave in the middle of the rainforest. Super neat.

Well, that’s my trip and just a smattering of photos.

If anyone is interested, you can see the entire gallery (of digital pics anyway, I’m picking up the ones from my actual film camera this evening), you can check them out here.
